--------------------------------------------------------- First Announcement: "40 Years of Pulsars: Millisecond Pulsars, Magnetars, and More" August 12-17, 2007 McGill University, Montreal, Canada http://www.ns2007.org/ --------------------------------------------------------- Dear colleague, We are pleased to invite you to a conference entitled "40 Years of Pulsars: Millisecond Pulsars, Magnetars, and More" to be held at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, from August 12th to 17th 2007. This conference is to celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of radio pulsars in the summer of 1967. We will highlight the important discoveries of the last 40 years and address the most interesting and topical areas of neutron star astrophysics today. Keynote speakers: Anthony Hewish (Cambridge) Joseph Taylor (Princeton) Public lecture: Jocelyn Bell Burnell (Oxford), evening of August 14th Scientific topics: Pulsar searches and timing; accretion and recycling; millisecond pulsars in the field and in globular clusters; young neutron stars, including magnetars, traditional Crab-like pulsars, and isolated neutron stars; glitches, precession, and nulling; binary pulsars, including the double pulsar; constraints on mass, radius, and the equation of state; new and future instrumentation. The meeting will also include brief anecdotal talks from eminent pulsar researchers, giving their personal recollections of important moments in pulsar history. Information about accommodations, registration, and a call for abstracts will follow in a future announcement, and on our website http://www.ns2007.org/. Please forward this announcement to anyone you think might be interested. We hope to see you in Montreal next August, Scientific Organizing Committee (contact: soc@ns2007.org) Andrew Cumming (Co-chair, McGill), Vicky Kaspi (Co-chair, McGill), Matthew Bailes (Swinburne), Deepto Chakrabarty (MIT), Monica Colpi (Universita' Milano-Bicocca), Jeremy Heyl (UBC), Vicky Kalogera (Northwestern), Michael Kramer (Manchester), Dong Lai (Cornell), George Pavlov (Penn State), Fred Rasio (Northwestern), Ingrid Stairs (UBC), Luigi Stella (INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma), Chris Thompson (CITA), Marten van Kerkwijk (Toronto), Frank Verbunt (Utrecht) Local Organizing Committee Cees Bassa (Utrecht/McGill), David Champion (McGill), Andrew Cumming (McGill), Vicky Kaspi (McGill), Robert Rutledge (McGill), Zhongxiang Wang (McGill)
